MhM – About us
Mieter helfen Mietern, Hamburger Mieterverein e.V. is a tenants' association that advises its members on all questions concerning tenancy law. The MhM legal advice centre is located in Hamburg's Schanzenviertel. Here and in eight other legal advice offices throughout Hamburg, members and tenants who want to become members can seek advice from MhM lawyers. Of course, tenants from the surrounding area or the whole of Germany can also become members and seek advice. You can find out more about our advisory services and our office opening hours.
MhM was founded in 1980. It is a registered and non-profit association with around 18,500 members (as of 12/31/2020).
MhM's board of directors consists of the lawyers Thomas Breckner and Udo Smetan as well as lawyer Eva Proppe. Our Managing director is lawyer Sylvia Sonnemann.
The statute define the goals and structures of the association. The annual report is published annually in the association's newspaper Mietraum² and presented at the general meeting.
The association is independent of political parties. MhM represents the interests of Hamburg tenants* even beyond legal advice. This is done through lobbying with authorities and at the political level, as well as through public relations and committee work and tenant campaigns, in some cases in close cooperation with Hamburg district and tenant initiatives.
The association provides further training for lawyers and authority employees and offers theme evenings on housing and tenancy law.
MhM has 29 employees and around 30 lawyers working on a voluntary and fee basis. MhM is financed exclusively by membership fees and receives no public funds.
MhM is a non-profit organisation and provides consumer advice. Donations are tax-deductible.
